San Francisco’s Castro District, often simply referred to as “The Castro,” is one of the most iconic and historically significant neighborhoods in the city. Known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, colorful Victorian architecture, and lively atmosphere, the Castro has a rich history that reflects the cultural and social evolution of San Francisco.
The Castro District’s origins date back to the 19th century when it was primarily farmland. Originally called Eureka Valley, the area was dotted with dairy farms and ranches. In the late 1800s, as San Francisco’s population grew, Eureka Valley began to develop into a residential neighborhood. The construction of the Market Street Railway in 1887 made the area more accessible, spurring further development.
